About the Dark Times Apothecary

The Dark Times Apothecary was opened in November 2019 by Dianne Tanner – a budding student of Herbology and life who had been learning the way of herbs and magic for a few years quietly. She’s typing this now in the third person, it’s weird.

Dianne was born in New Zealand, and after 16 years of London life has settled in the delicious grey peace of Manchester. She has a cat called Cricket, who is almost definitely asleep on her face while you are reading this.

Our end goal at Dark Times is to open a store and collective space that brings together witches and creatives to support, inspire, and encourage one another through this messy world, through handcrafted goods, workshops and gatherings in a safe and inclusive space open to all.

For now though, lets just do what we can to get through the day, shall we?

Several years of finding, learning, studying and making herbal coping mechanisms to help us to feel more in control, steady and supported in daily life have gone into the creation of the Dark Times Apothecary.  You might be here because you’re curious, and also fed up of feeling overwhelmed, lost and out of control. Same. Here you’ll find nature infused tools to help you get through the day to day joy of being human, hand-build ceramics for your altars, and make soothing art as spells to hang in your home and watch over you.

Everything is (unless otherwise mentioned) home-grown and hand-harvested from our sweet small herb garden, carefully sourced from the woods nearby, or grown in the gardens of friends and family. I make things slowly over time, using carefully selected ingredients to make oils, balms and tinctures to ground, support, and calm during times of need – all in small batches, and limited runs.

Please read all of the information below before you head on over to the store, it’s important to keep you safe and so you know how the Apothecary operates.

An Important Note

Everything you see here is the result of a lot of research, practice, study, testing and trial and error, but please remember that all products sold in the store are meant to help you find some kind of support during difficult and dark times – they are not replacements for real medical treatement and should not be treated as such. Please immunize yourself and your children. Please see your doctor if you have a real medical issue, or if you are unsure or nervous about using any of the herbs included in these products, and always, always do your own research if you have any concerns before you purchase and use our products.

Always scroll down to the bottom of every product listing before purchasing to read the full list of ingredients, and always make sure the product you have purchased is right for you before you purchase. You are always responsible for your own life experience, including what you buy here. It is very important to note that while these products may react differently or not be suitable for your own specific needs.

Some of the herbs I have used are not safe for everyone to use, depending on the individuals circumstances – medication you’re already on, sensitivities you might already have. You will always find as much info as I am able to provide highlighted in the lower section of every product listing. I recommend you check in with your own medical story before you try any of our, or any other herbal products.  Always be safe and if anything weird starts to happen, stop using your product immediatly and speak to your doctor.

If you are ever unsure, please do some research of your own. Everything listed here can be verified online through some light implimentation of your chosen online search tool.  You can always drop us a message, if you want to double check something – but remember we do not know your background, Dianne is not a certified herbalist or medical professional and can not diagnose or treat any medical problems you may have. Again, as an adult you have full control of your own body and life, please make your own decisions wisely. We encourage you to do your own research where you have concerns.

We can just offer you some tools I’ve found helpful for certain things, to get us through the day.

A Note on Pricing:

Everything in the store is priced to a sliding scale to make products more available to people of different incomes. Everything defaults to the “normal” price, meaning I make an ideal profit from these and cover all costs across the board. If you are on a lower income, or finding times more difficult I welcome you to choose the Low Income option. This price means I cover costs for each product, and make a small amount extra to cover other costs – but mostly, it means I can offer you something to help you when you need it most.

Those of you who are flourishing have a third option to choose a slightly higher price point if you wish. There is absolutely no pressure to do this, but its there in case you are feeling generous and wish to balance out those who are finding times difficult.

An important note that 10% of all profits every month are donated to a charity we feel needs our support. Every sale from the store contributes to this donation every month, regardless of pricing tier you choose for your purchase.
